- If you still have the Lion OS installer there is a way to install it by back dating your system so the certificate check passes. But I think its just wiser to get to Sierra as being the best OS for these older MacBook Pro's which have SATA drives and APFS has issues with SATA (HDD or SSD).

So my 2010 MacBook Pro A1278 got wiped and I am currently trying to download OS on the laptop.
I keep getting an error in recovery mode to download Lion (need additional components error), so I made a bootable drive on my other Mac with High Sierra.
There you find option to download macOS sierra for your Macbook pro appstore with installation option for sierra Click on download button (ensure that you have good wifi or LAN connectivity) Size of the OS is approx 4.7GB it will take approx half to 1 hour depends on net speed.
I was finally able to start my computer with the flash drive, but when I tried to download High Sierra on to my computer it did not give me the option to download it to my hard drive, it was grayed out.
Any ideas? I'm out of them. Activate camera on macbook pro. Thank you.

#How to Install Sierra OS (Dual boot)?
To set up a dual-boot system you'll need to do the following things.
- Open up Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and select the main drive. Then select the Partition option.
- Now you'll see a large rectangle with the heading Partition Layout. Currently, it will be a single drive, so click the Plus button beneath it and then click on the new partition you created.
- To resize the partition simply drag the partition corners.
- Now rename the new partition from any name you want then click Apply.
- Now find the downloaded version of macOS Sierra and click on it to begin the install.
- When you see the option of which disk you want to install it on be sure to select the new partition that you created earlier in step 4.
- When it's done click on install and let the process starts automatically, after completing with your Mac will rebooting into Sierra.
From now on when you want to return to the previous version of macOS (or OS X) on your system, reboot your machine while holding down the Alt key. This will present you with a menu of which drive you want to boot from.Thanks to PCA for this guide.
